Kathleen Sparkes

Kathleen Sparkes joined Dumbarton Oaks in 2009. As Director of Publications, she supports the publication of numerous volumes in Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden and Landscape Studies. Sparkes has been an artist since 1976, and a graphic designer since 1988. In 1993, she created the design firm White Hart Design, serving many clients in advertising and marketing before moving her business entirely to publishing design and project management. In this capacity, she worked with many small presses, including John Muir and Ancient City Press in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Avalon Travel Publishing in Emeryville, California, for which she managed the Rick Steves travel series. In addition to work for her small-press clients, she contracted with American Archaeology magazine as their Art and Production Director, and she served as a staff instructor at the Art Center Design College in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for two years. In 2004, she joined the University of New Mexico Press as Senior Graphic Designer, designing and producing twenty to twenty-five new titles every year and winning four awards for design from Book Builders West and the Publisher’s Association of the West.
